The Best Job I Ever Had

Okay, it sound crazy, but the best job I ever had was “Receiving Manager” at a grocery store. I know you’re probably thinking that my other jobs must really suck if this is the best. But, give me a second to explain.

First, let me describe the job of Receiving Manager. A Receiving Manager is responsible for verifying the contents of all deliveries to the grocery store, storing the goods until they are merchandised or sold and generating vendor invoices based on received goods. If the Receiving Manager is any good, all goods delivered (and not delivered) are accurately accounted for, safely stored, easily accessible and paid for ontime. And, the company doesn’t end up paying for goods they never received, or goods delivered damaged or in error.
The Receiving Manager usually generates reports based on received items. These reports can be used to verify that everything that came in the back door passed through the register or can be found on the salesfloor or in storage. The reports can also be used to determine which invoices were paid and when.

Of equal importance is that fact that the Receiving Manager puts thousands of dollars per month back into the company’s pocket by RTM’ing, or returning, damaged or expired product to vendors for credit.

Now that you know what the job entails, I’ll tell you why it was the best.

Being a Receiving Manager was the best job I ever had because…

  • I went in to work early and finished early (No late shifts, no long shifts)
  • I completely controlled my domain (Nothing came in/out until I said so)
  • I absolutely understood how my job contributed to the company’s bottomline
  • I worked with nice people who understood what they were expected to do
  • I dressed comfortably, though stylishly everyday

And…the BIGGIE…

  • I completed everything on my To-Do list everyday!!!
