Get Into the Game: Start A Career in Sports

Few industries are as sexy as the sports industry. In fact, I can think of only one that might rival the sports industry in sex appeal–Entertainment. Of course now they are practically synonymous.

Just like the entertainment industry, breaking into the sports industry is tough to do, especially if you want to be in a key role (coach, sports management, team staff, as opposed to selling food at stadium concession stands).

So, I’ve compiled a few resources to help you on your quest to gain entry into the wonderful world of sports.

If they won’t give it to you, give it away. “It” being your talent and service. Those of us who can work for free (or darn close to it) can jump into a sports internship. Contrary to popular belief, internships are not just for the young or the undergraduates. Though they are just for those willing to work hard for little or no money.

Sports Internships for grown-ups:

  • NCAA Ethnic Minority and Women’s Internship Grant Program -A paid ($19,110, plus $3000-$6000 for professional development and living expenses), full-time 10-month internship that provides the intern an “opportunity for learning, and contribute in administration/coaching”. The internship program begins Fall 2006. Internships are available at participating NCAA Division III colleges and conference offices. Intern jobs available with the mentors/departments including head coach (any sport), marketing and promotions and operations. Apply or get more info.
  • NBA Associate Program -A 12-week program for recent college grads designed to expose associates to all aspects of NBA business. Internships located in NBA League Offices in Manhattan, NY or Secaucus, NJ.
