You’ve probably heard it a million times. Teachers are the most under-appreciated and over-worked souls among us. It’s still the truth. However, a new program promises to change this for the most underserved, and arguably most deserving, of teachers, those who work in high-poverty, high-needs schools. The Rodel Charitable Foundation of Arizona’s Promising Student Teachers Program offers Arizona student-teachers who plan to pursue careers in high-poverty schools and school districts (inner city, rural, reservation, etc.) an opportunity to complete their training with a Rodel Exemplary Teacher.
Under the program, Student-teachers are mentored by experienced teachers who have been recognized by the Rodel Foundation for their exemplary record and work in high-needs schools. Student-teachers spend a semester shadowing and working one-on-one with an Exemplary Teacher. Student-teachers will also receive “supplemental training and mentoring from Rodel staff designed to further prepare them for their first years of teaching. The training specifically addresses the challenges of teaching in high-poverty shcools and focuses on practical strategies for increasing student achievement.”
The Rodel program encourages student-teachers to pursue jobs in high-poverty, high needs schools. Those that take on this challenge will receive a $10,000 U.S. Savings Bond upon completion of their third year of teaching.
Rodel will provide ongoing training and support throughout the student-teacher’s first three years, including periodic professional development and collaborative opportunities.
