Another Internship for Grown-Ups: Newspaper Association of America Diversity Internship
Posted on | November 27, 2006 | No Comments
The Newspaper Association of America (NAA) offers a “breakthrough” opportunity for high-performing mid-career minorities working in the newspaper industry. The program, titled the James K. Batten Leadership and Career Development Program, was named for James K. Batten, the former chairman and CEO of Knight-Ridder and first NAA Diversity Committee Chair. The goals of the program are:
- Retain high-performing mid-career minority professionals who often leave the industry to find advancement opportunities
- Career Development for minority newspaper professionals
- Access to top talent
The program pairs junior professionals with senior newspaper executives who elect to participate (This is important because all too often these programs fail because the senior partner is forced/obligated to participate in order to set an example or demonstrate executive support for the program; not because s/he is truly interested in the goal the program seeks to achieve).
Here’s how the program works:
- The program lasts 1 year (beginning each April at the NAA Annual Convention and ends at the next NAA Annual conference the following April)
- Mid-career minority professionals apply to participate
- Senior executives volunteer as mentors
- During the NAA Annual Convention, the Junior and Senior
- Partners participate in a half-day workshop on mentoring and several conference sessions together
Then, over the next 12 months…
- Attend a conference of one of the minority media associations (National Association of
- Minority Media Executives, National Association of Black Journalists, National Association of Hispanic Journalists, Asian American, Journalists Association or Native American Journalists Association)
- Attend an industry event/conference (NAA Marketing Conference, Connections, NEXPO, Associated Press Managing Editors)
- Exchange newspaper visits
- Attend a mid-year session in November
- Attend the next NAA Annual Convention for a program wrap-up, celebration and evaluation
Program Costs
- No costs to the minority mid-year professional (referred to as the junior partner)
- All costs (registration, travel and lodging) associated with attending the NAA Annual Convention, the minority media association conferences and visits to the senior executives newspaper
Eligibility
High-performing mid-career minority professionals in the media industry who are recommended by their supervisor or manager.
