If you are a minority journalist with an interest in reporting on environmental justice, environmental science and related topics, are a U.S. citizen, and have at least 1 year of reporting experience , the Metcalf Institute for Marine and Environmental Reporting may have $28,000 for you!
The Metcalf Institute annually funds up to six fellowships for minority journalists as part of its Diversity Fellowships in Environmental Reporting program. The goal, of course, is to increase representation of ethnic minority journalists in the field of environmental and marine reporting.
The program does not discriminate on the basis of media either. Journalists from all walks of reporting life–whether in broadcasting, print, podcasting or blogging–are eligible.
This 42-week fellowship program provides minority journalists with an opportunity to learn basic science, gain environmental research and reporting skills, and apply new knowledge and skills in a 38-week reporting assignment.
The Diversity Fellowships begin with four weeks of independent study at the University of Rhode Island and the URI Graduate School of Oceanography, including a three-day science immersion workshop on environmental justice. Following the independent study, the fellows will work for nine months reporting on science and the environment at NOVA Science Television, in radio at WGBH The World and NPR-member station, WBUR, Boston, and in print at the Christian Science Monitor, The Standard-Times of New Bedford, Mass., and The Providence Journal, Providence, R.I.
In addition to the $28,000 salary, your travel expenses will be covered.
Submit the original and one copy of all application materials. Information will be used only to evaluate applicants. Please complete all items. Applications must be postmarked by April 9, 2007.
