The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released it’s monthly Employment Situation report for the month of December. While the national unemployment rate held steady at 4.5% through the end of 2006, 167,000 jobs were added in the month of December.
Fastest-Growing Job Sectors (Number of Jobs Added as December 31, 2006):

- Healthcare……….(31,300)
- Accommodation and food services……….(27,200)
- Administrative and waste services……….(25,500)
- Administrative and supply services………(24,300)
- Professional and technical consulting services……….(23,400)
- Food services and drinking places……….(22,600)
- Temporary help services……..(14,600)
- Trade, Transportation, Utilities………(14,000)
Services to buildings and dwellings………. (13,000) - Employment services……….(11,300)
- Finance and insurance……….(9,700)
- Management and technical consulting services………. (7,000)
Declining Sectors (Jobs lost):
- Residential specialty trade contractors……….(-10,400)
- Utilities……….(-9,000)
Motor vehicles and parts………. (-5,000) - Primary metals……….. (-3,000)
- Textile mills (-2,000)
**Over the year, manufacturing employment
fell by 72,000 with declines widespread throughout the component industries.
