IDEO, an innovative design firm, is hiring a Jr. Toy Inventor/Interaction Designer.
The job description is as follows:
IDEO’s award-winning Zero20 practice focuses on design for youth from age zero to twenty. Combining a passion for play and a strong work ethic, Zero20 works on a wide range of projects for kids. In addition, the practice has invented and licensed over 125 original toy, game, and children’s concepts to such companies as Mattel, Hasbro, and Fisher-Price. Zero20 is looking to hire a Junior Toy Designer to add to its multidisciplinary team of inventors, designers, engineers, artists, and scientists. The position is based in Palo Alto.
IDEO looks for candidates that are “T-shaped” — people who have depth in one area of expertise, but also breadth in related and non-related fields. As an example, an IDEO toy inventor may have a degree in Interaction Design with a depth in Flash, but also have a breadth of working skills in video production, electronics, sewing, illustration and photography.
The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in toy design, computer science, or interaction design and 1-3 years of experience designing interactive experiences. A range of creative and problem solving skills — as well as the ability to function on many small and fast paced teams — will be required of the candidate. The ideal candidate will work hands-on, have strong visual design and communication skills, and exercise proficiency in both hardware and software prototyping tools. A passion for toy design and a point of view about your work is essential. A demonstrated expertise in Flash (including action script) is required as well as working knowledge of Photoshop and Illustrator. Experience with website design, mechanical prototyping, and additional programming languages is a strong plus.
