More Fun in Cannes

It’s 1:52am in Cannes and the crowd from the “Gutter Bar” is still going strong outside my hotel.  Tonight we attended the Cyber Awards Ceremony at the Palais des Festivals.  The ceremony was nice enough.  The stage was lit up and fitted with multiple projection screens that allowed the audience to view the gold, bronze and silver lion-winning entries from the interactive agency of the year, media person of the year, print, print young creatives, press and cyber categories.  The names will be published later today.

Based on a few conversations I’ve had about the outcomes, no one was amazingly surprised that most of the awards went to European and Asian companies (or arms of U.S.-based companies).  However, there were a few standout U.S. winners, including Goodby Silverstein for its “Get the Glass” claymation website and game.

The biggest surprise of all was perhaps the fact that the print entries were so amazing.  The need to do inventive things with technology, whether online or via mobile technology is a huge theme here, so many (or at least those who stuck around until the end) were pleasantly surprised to find that there was still some very compelling and inventive work happening on good ol’ low-tech paper.
