Uncle Sam is hiring! And, like other employers, is battling a strong economy and a seller’s market for talent. Unlike other employers, Uncle Sam is also fighting the war in Iraq, mass Boomer retirements, and trust issues surrounding its CEO.
The government is the nation’s largest employer, offering career opportunities in every conceivable field–from filmmaking and engineering to foreign trade and auto mechanics.
The Partnership for Public Service, a nonprofit organization that promotes careers in public service, surveyed 34 government agencies and incorporated Bureau of Labor Statistics and U.S. Census Data to arrive at the number of employees the U.S. government is expected to hire over the next two years. In the organization’s report entitled Where the Jobs Are: Mission Critical Opportunities for America (2007), they estimate that Uncle Sam will hire 193,000 workers between now and 2009, 83,000 of those in the Office of Homeland Security.
Eighty-percent of the “mission-critical” hires will be in 5 professional fields:
1. Security, Protection, Compliance and Enforcement (62,863 new hires)
2. Medical and Public Health (35,350 new hires)
3. Accounting, Budget and Business (21,248 new hires)
4. Engineering and Sciences (17,477 new hires)
5. Program Management/Analysis and Administration (14,305 new hires)
It’s been 2 years since the Partnership’s last report, and plenty changed. Most notably, the 25% increase in Homeland Security jobs and a dramatic increase in IT hiring.
Other in-demand jobs include transportation security officers (22,329 new hires), air traffic controllers (15,004 new hires), IRS tax examiners and revenue agents (7,950) and attorneys (3,440).
