CareerBuilder’s Questionable Career Search Tools

Careerbuilder is without argument one of the most successful career and job search sites on the web, but its latest, um, tools are…weird.

I couldn’t resist trying it.  But, once I tried it, I confirmed that it was without a doubt one of the stupidest bits I’ve seen on a job search site, and not just because chimps are not monkeys.  I’m talking, of course, about Monk-Email.  Monk-Email works by asking you to select one of 3 chimps to dress up in stupid outfits.  Then, you add a message via text to voice or mic.  The finished product can be emailed to your friends.  I get the tie-in to their television ads, but I still think it’s stupid.  I sent it to my friend and she thought it was stupid.  But, I’d still recommend checking it out.  At a minimum, it’s a brain break.
The other random bit of technology is the Age-o-Matic.  This bit is funnier, but funny sad, not funny haha.  The little app takes in your photos, then ages and distresses your face and hair, and for some reason, your clothing to simulate the effect of boss-related stress over time.

The final bit of Careerbuilder tech I’d like to bring to your attention is the Careerbuilder Job Machine.  I really wanted to like this one.  But, at the end of the day, it’s a bit of a sexy swindle.  Here’s the offer: You upload your resume.  The “Job Machine” scans it for keywords and magically delivers job listings for which you should apply.  I like the idea of this, but it doesn’t work any better than plugging keywords into the search box.  And, it kinda tricks folks into submitting their resumes into the black hole of their desperate resume database.  The “Job Machine” also suckers you into subscribing to the email alerts and making your resume available for employer searches.  Of course, you can opt out of the alerts and keep your resume private, but then, what’s the point of using The “Job Machine”?
