The American Nonworker

The Census Bureau just released one of its most interesting reports to date, a report on the “Reasons People Do Not Work”. What’s interesting about this survey is that it focusing on the 79 millions Americans (nearly 35% of the population) who are not working for various reasons. And, most interesting of all is that 5.3%, or 1,978, of the 38 million nonworkers age 20 to 64 listed their reason as “Not interested in working”. What!?!
Of the lazy people citing “NI”, 2.4% were male and 11.3% were women. FYI-These were not women who were working in the home as moms, so I don’t know what’s up with this unambitious group.
Here’s how the rest of the 20 to 64 crowd shook out:
Reason for not working (%)
Taking care of others (26%)
Chronic Illness or disability (25%)
Retired (14%)
Going to school (10%)
Unable to work (8%)
Not interested in working (5%)
Other (4%)
On layoff (4%)
Temporary illness or injury (3%)
Pregnancy/childbirth (2%)
