New Year’s Career Resolutions

I’ve done it! I’ve finally finished my career resolutions! Usually, I’m well into the first month of the new year before I can actually get up the nerve to write them down. It always takes me some time to convince myself that I’m not going to poison pen myself by crafting impossible goals, or by dooming myself to only the most minor of accomplishments.

This year, I’ve decided to concentrate on big things–big dreams, big goals and big accomplishments. No more sober dreams! This year I’m going all out. What the hell am I waiting for, right?2008 Year of Careersthatdontsuck's Phenomenal Career

I’m blowing the doors off my old career in 2008 and so should you. Take advantage of the multitude of changes this year brings to make major changes in your working life.

The election’s upon us. That means new government regime (hopefully), economic changes, new legislation, new government funding and new government jobs.

New government always leads to changes in the way businesses do business, so there’ll be plenty of opportunity to take advantage of consulting niches and newly created jobs.

Despite the current economic situation, the new year brings new starts to many companies empowering them to increase hiring and promotions, even add new divisions.

Fortunately or unfortunately, lots of things come to an end with every new year. Some employers will effect layoffs, close down or reorganize as a result of a tough 2007 or impending legislative or economic changes.

If you haven’t already drafted your new year’s career resolutions, break out a big permanent marker and a big poster-sized sticky note. Now, commit to it! Write out the career resolutions to end all resolutions!

A few suggestions.

1. Update your resume (Okay, we’re starting small. But trust me, this is a big deal!)

2. Take steps (3 or less) to leave a job that makes you miserable

3. Ask for a promotion or a raise (You deserve one, right?) OR start a new business!
4. Work with your significant other to create a schedule that balances work and personal life

5. Further your professional development (Go back to school, get certified, take licensing exams, whatever it takes!)

6. BONUS: Do something BIG, take a gamble if you think it’ll pay off. This is your year, the year of the Phenomenal Career!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
