There’s a lot of news out there on companies cutting jobs, the latest being EBay, CitiGroup, Western Union and NYPD. Rather than focus on depressing subtraction, I’d rather focus on addition–the addition of jobs.
So, here’s a quick list of the companies and organizations that are adding jobs.
- Officials from Northstar Battery, an 8-year-old company that makes batteries for the telecommunications industry, said their new 300,000-square-foot plant located in Springfield, Mo. will create 400 jobs over three years.
- Irvine, California-based Birtcher Development says a project the Riverside County Board of Supervisors recently approved will eventually bring about 240 full-time jobs to the northwest area of the county. Construction will begin this summer on the $20 million project, creating 75 construction jobs.
- Rayovac (Spectrum Brands) is bringing 50 jobs back to the Rayovac plant in Fennimore, WI.
- Boars Head Provisions, a meat and cheese company, will add more than 200 jobs in Holland Township (MI) after receiving a tax credit worth more than $1.6 million from the state and a break of almost $750,000 from the township.
- C&G Boat Works Inc., a shipyard on Mobile, Alabama’s Blakeley Island, plans to add as many as 150 new jobs in the next three years, continuing its rapid growth. The jobs would pay an average of $52,000 a year.
- Backed by a $2.5 million infusion of venture capital, Bourne, Massachusetts-based Environmental Operating Solutions plans to add jobs at its Cape Cod office, as well as expand manufacturing and distribution of its eco-friendly water treatment products. Within the next few months, the company will be hiring five new people to work at its Cape Cod location. These positions will be in engineering, sales and marketing, he said, and will likely pay more than the median salary for the region.
- Defense contractor BAE Systems Inc. plans to expand its facility in York, Pennsylvania after receiving an offer of more than $4.3 million in financial aid from the state. BAE plans to invest $40 million in the project, and add more than 600 workers to the 1,600 already there.
- Sony will invest more than $101 million in new equipment and more than $7.4 million in property improvements at its Terre Haute, Indiana plant. The company, which plans to add at least 65 jobs. Sony currently has 1,183 employees, with 888 hourly workers earning an average of $17.63 per hour, excluding benefits and overtime, plus 295 salaried positions with an average annual salary of $65,607, excluding benefits. Of the estimated 65 new employees, 50 will be hourly permanent positions and 15 salaried permanent positions.
- Economic development officials from Boone County in North Carolina are working on bringing a distribution center for Amazon.com to the AllPoints at Anson development in Whitestown. The center could employ 1,200 people.
- Speed Channel Inc. will expand its Charlotte, NC headquarters, creating 34 jobs and investing $37.8 million over the next three years. Wages for the additional 34 jobs will vary by job function, but the average pay is expected to be $61,765 per year, not including benefits. The average annual salary in Mecklenburg County is $48,724.
- Birmingham, Alabama-based Regions Financial corporation is continuing to add jobs after it’s mega-merger with Amsouth Bank. Regions’ chairman says the company has added 400 jobs to the Birmingham area since the merger and he expects “several hundred more.”
- The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has awarded a contract worth about $200 million to Westinghouse Electric Co. for work on the Unit 2 reactor at Watts Bar Nuclear Plant in Spring City, TN. The project is expected to last five years, cost $2.49 billion and employ 2,300 engineers and craftsmen at its peak.
- BMW Manufacturing Co. announced that it will spend $750 million to expand its manufacturing facility in Greer, SC and create 500 jobs.
- Monadnock, a manufacturer of specialty fastening solutions, plans to add 24 jobs and as their expansion continues into next year they plan to add 36 more. The company will hire everything from machine operators to general contractors. Full time employees will earn between $12 and $15 an hour. To apply call 570-839-9210.
- Tyson Foods Inc. plans to add 370 jobs this summer at its Berry Street processing plant in Springdale, AR. The plant employs about 700 hourly workers and 50 managers.
