A new survey by USA Today and Careerbuilder revealed that, of the 2,757 hiring managers and HR managers polled, less than a third (29%) plan to hire new employees this quarter. Neither geography nor company size seems to affect this disappointing stat.
Twenty-two percent of small businesses (1-50 employees) plan to hire new employees. Thirty-three percent of large corporations (250+ employees) plan to hire this quarter.
Thirty-one percent of employers in the West plan to hire this quarter. Only 25% of employers in the Midwest, 30% of employers in the South and 31% in the Northeast plan to hire.
There was some good news.
The great majority (59%) plan to hold steady–neither hire nor fire–this quarter.
Only 7% of the polled employers plan to lay off permanent, full-time workers next quarter.
And, if you happen to work for any of these folks, you’ll be happy to know that your paycheck may swell by a whopping 1%-3% (according to 41% of survey participants).
