Full-Court Press on Part-Time Jobs
Posted on | May 7, 2008 | No Comments
The April Jobs Report revealed a big spike in the number of persons employed in part-time jobs. A surprising 306,000 workers joined the part-time workforce in the month of April alone, bringing the grand total of all part-time workers (year-to-date) to 5.2 million. That’s 849,000 higher than in April 2007.
The increase is due to economic necessity–people are accepting part-time jobs because their hours are being cut back and/or they cannot find full-time jobs.
That part’s depressing, but there’s always a bright side here on Careersthatdontsuck.com! The bright side is this.
5 GREAT THINGS ABOUT PART-TIME JOBS
- You can work when you want (unless you want to work full-time)
- You can do just the work you’re interested in (Good luck getting this from a full-time job!)
- You can daisy-chain a few part-time jobs into one great full-time job
- You can leverage valuable experience and exposure into a better full-time job post-recession
- You might actually earn more money (Some employers are willing to pay higher hourly rates to part-timers who aren’t usually eligible for benefits*)
- Bonus: Built-in work-life balance!
*Some part-time jobs do offer benefits
