Today I engaged in an activity to which I thought I’d never resort. To the naked eye it might have appeared that I was eavesdropping on someone else’s conversation, and then subsequently inserting myself into their conversation.
OK, that’s exactly what I did.  But, there was a bit more to it. I was eavesdropping…with a purpose.
You see, there were three people–one woman and two men–sitting at a table talking intently about something. As I passed their table, I noted that the woman was showing the younger of the two men her portfolio of clothing designs. Instantly, my ears was peaked (I never met a business-related conversation I didn’t like).
So, after ordering my bagel, I settled into a table nearby. As their conversation progressed, the other man at the table spoke of his invention and his desire to see it sold in stores nationwide. Both the man and the woman were clearly looking to the younger man to help them achieve their business goals.
Now, I was dying to know what the younger man did, what he offered, that made these two folks with very different business goals believe that he could help them.
So, when it appeared that their meeting was ending, I approached the younger man, introduced myself and inquired about his business and his curious meeting.
He explained that he and his partners ran a series of motivational workshops for “people who want financial and spiritual freedom”.
The man and woman with whom he’d just met had apparently attended one of the events and were interested in how their “program” worked. The impressive young man explained his program and business model to me. And, after a couple of hours of talking–about my background and his, and both our business models–he offered me a speaking engagement at his upcoming event.
So, what’s the point of this little tale?
Simple. Times are hard, so do whatever you can to create business and career opportunities–resort to guerilla networking if you must.
