In the midst of it all, a cornfield shines–a beacon of light in a dark economy. Unlike the rest of the country, Nebraska’s economy is growing. The epicenter of Nebraska’s growth is its capital, Lincoln. The city gained jobs in nearly every sector, including retail and manufacturing, and lost only very few jobs. Lincoln and Nebraska have also been spared the housing foreclosures and the business closures that have plagued manufacturing-centered cities and states (Nebraska’s economy is anchored by strong agriculture sector and its emphasis on services rather than manufacturing). Nebraska’s universities and government sectors have also been stabilizing factors for their economy.
The number of jobs in Nebraska has increased by 10,707 since May of 2007, as the number of unemployed people rose about 1,500 to about 32,000.
