REMOTE CONTROL
What you will not see in 2009 is businesses rushing to acquire more real estate or take back old office space. Even if they do manage to add new jobs or bring back laid off workers, many of those newly hired workers will not find themselves in Dilbert’s digs (cubicles, that is). Instead, many employers will hire workers to work from home, at least part of the time. This will save employers and workers time and money. Employers will be able to house their businesses in smaller facilities. Workers will save gas and commute time.
In 2009, telecommuting policies will become standard for many employees at white-collar employers. Every offer letter for a management-level employee will certainly include this once elusive benefit. Employers will begin outfitting employees with laptops and webcams and Web conference codes as a matter of course.
Career & Business Opportunities
This will create plenty of opportunities for human resources practitioners and consultants with experience founding and managing virtual organizations, audio/visual specialists who can set up and maintain teleconference and Web conference equipment, network administrators, IT professionals , and tech support specialists to provide remote support for home-based workers, and maintain equipment, IT and communications networks for office- and home- based workers.
Manufacturers, installers and resellers of teleconference and Web conference equipment and software, companies that provide Web-based collaboration platforms or tools and technology consulting firms will also fare well.
Related Prediction: More people working from home means growth in the market for ergonomic home office equipment and furniture.
