Equal Pay Act Means More Money, More Lawsuits for Women

President Obama signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act into law today. The bill is intended to close the pay gap between men and women using the threat of more lawsuits. The law extends the period during which women, and men who are discriminated against because of race, religion, color or national origin, may file discrimination lawsuits.
Originally, women were only allowed to file discrimination lawsuits within 180 days of the first incidence of discriminatory pay. Ledbetter increases that period by adding an additional 180 days for every new discriminatory paycheck.
Hopefully, Ledbetter will “inspire” employers to equitably pay men and women doing the same jobs. But, if they won’t do it on their own, hungry lawyers and their cash-starved clients will light a fire under them.
Under Ledbetter, women who win their lawsuits can receive compensation, including up to two years of back pay.
