States With the Largest Decreases in New Unemployment Claims

The number of new unemployment claims fell unexpectedly for the week ending March 14. There were 646,000 new claims, a decrease of 12,000 from the prior week. That brings the total number of persons receiving unemployment benefits to 5.47 million (as of March 7), an increase of 185,000 from the prior week. That’s the national picture, but take a look at what’s happening in individual states.

- New York (-11,218)
- Connecticut (-2,254)
- Tennessee (-2,153)
- California (-1,277)
- Oregon (-1,139)

The majority of these states attribute the drop to fewer layoffs in the service, manufacturing and trade sectors. Let’s hope that this is a sign that job-hunting prospects are improving.
