The Invisible Unemployed
Posted on | May 11, 2009 | No Comments
Every news story or unemployment report focuses on the millions of people who have searched for jobs within the last 4 weeks. But, there is another group of unemployed people who go largely unnoticed. These persons are referred to as “marginally attached to the labor force” because they wanted and were available for work sometime in the prior 12 months, but were not counted as unemployed because they had not actively searched for work in the past 4 weeks. The marginally attached have stopped looking for work because they don’t believe there are jobs available for them. Their ranks have grown to 2.1 million and include mostly younger people, blacks, Hispanics and men.
