Unemployment By Numbers

According to today’s Economic News Release from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, unemployment rates increased in 372 metropolitan areas in May. But this stat is just the beginnings of a sketch of the job market. The rest of the release paints a melancholy picture of the job market, accented with hopeful strokes representing the metro areas that appear to be faring, or recovering, well.
Unemployment By Numbers
372 Metro areas had over-the-year unemployment rate increases
295 Metro areas reported over-the-year rate decreases
148 Metro areas have unemployment rates higher than the national average
112 Metro areas have unemployment rates of at least 10%
97 Metro areas reported rates of below 7%
21 Metro areas have unemployment rates of below 5%
15 Metro areas reported over-the-year rate increases
15 Metro areas have unemployment rates of 15% or more
Of the 15 Metro areas with unemployment rates of 15% or more, 7 were in California, 3 in Michigan and 2 in Indiana
