Your Get-Back-to-Work Strategy
Posted on | July 20, 2009 | No Comments
If you pay too much attention to job market statistics, you’ll never leave your sofa. You’ll become mired in a horrid cycle of resume-blasting and cookie-eating that will not end until your resume is black-listed by every employer and your arse has permanently dented the sofa. That’s no good.
Instead, consider writing down and mapping a “Get-Back-to-Work Strategy”, a strategy that is not filled with cheery thoughts and big ideas, but with action steps, job postings, contact names, company names and calendared events. If this sounds like a big undertaking, it is. Most of us think we’ve crafted a strategic plan when all we’ve done is broad-stroked a vision for the future, one that celebrates the end game before we’ve even taken the field. The state of the job market, and your growing desperation, requires that you do more this time, that you invest an afternoon or evening in developing a real strategy, one that, if done right, will keep you circulating, keep your skills current and prime you for success.
What would a “Get-Back-to-Work Strategy” look like? What would you include? Every “Get-Back-to-Work Strategy” must include all of the information listed above–jobs, dates, people, companies, events. But, which jobs, dates, people, companies, and events should you include?
To answer this question, we should start with our Careersthatdontsuck.com Job Hunt Master Plan. If you recall, we posted this document at the beginning of the year to help get you started on your 2009 job hunt. The Job Hunt Master Plan outlines the 5 steps required to narrow your job search parameters, tailor your resume, start building social networks, spot hot opportunities and supplement your income while you search. The Job Hunt Master Plan is a necessary starting point, especially if you feel a little aimless, frazzled or desperate in your job search. Using the Master Plan will help you focus your energies and customize your resume for the search.
What the Master Plan will not do is make specific, concrete jobs, dates, companies, people or events magically appear. For that, you’ll need to move to the next phase. Careersthatdontsuck.com has a new tool to help you develop your strategy. Download a free copy of Careersthatdontsuck.com’s Get-Back-to-Work Strategy template.
