Vice President Joe Biden and Attorney General Eric Holder announced today that the Department of Justice would be issuing $1B grants to 1,046 law enforcement agencies in all 50 states. The money will fund 100 percent of the approved salary and benefits for 4,699 officers for three years. The grant program is being administered by the Department of Justice’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), and funding decisions were based on reported crimes for the previous calendar year, community policing activities, budget changes, and poverty, unemployment, and foreclosure rates in the area.
Law enforcement agencies throughout the country, many of whom have been feeling the strain of increased crime due to job losses and foreclosures, are already gearing up to hire more police officers. The Department of Justice has received more than 7,200 applications for more than 39,000 police officer positions, representing a total of $8.3 billion in requested funding.
