If You’ve Got a Job, You May Be Safe…At Least Until the Holidays

Manpower released its Employment Outlook Survey on Tuesday, and the report revealed that only 12% of U.S. employers expect to add to their workforces in the three months to the end of December 2009. Manpower interviewed more than 28,000 employers were asked about their hiring, and firing, plans. While only 12% said they expect to hire, only 14% expected a decrease in total employment in Q4 09. Most, 69% of employers, said they expected no change between now and December 2009. That’s good news for those of us who have jobs, and “not awful” news for the rest.
Of course, not all things are equal. Employers in the South report a slight increase in hiring expectations from Q3 to Q4 2009, while employers in the Northeast anticipate a moderate decrease in hiring, and employers in the West and Midwest expect the pace of hiring to remain unchanged.
All’s not equal across industry sectors either. The following industries expect an increase in hiring.
INDUSTRIES IN WHICH EMPLOYERS WILL HIRE IN Q4 2009
- Wholesale & Retail Trade
- Financial Activities
- Professional & Business Services
- Education & Health Services
- Leisure & Hospitality
