Small Businesses Cut 100,000 Jobs

We’ve all heard it said that small businesses are the backbone of our economy. But, this seems like “sappy crappy” until you consider that over 48 million people in the U.S. are employed by businesses with fewer than 50 workers. Then, the state of small business employment is magically relevant to all of us. As well it should be, especially when the September edition of ADP’s National Employment Report, a monthly report that estimates employment levels at private U.S. firms, says small businesses cut 100,000 jobs between August and September. That’s nearly 40% of the 254,000 jobs cut by all private employers during that period. Most of the losses were in the goods-producing sector, which lost 62,000 jobs. Service-providing small businesses cut 38,000 jobs.
To give these stats perspective, consider that mid-sized businesses (50-499 workers) and large businesses (500 or more workers) cut 93,000 and 61,000 jobs, respectively. And, that 100,000 jobs represents only 0.2% of the jobs currently provided by small businesses.
This is probably small comfort to all of the people who lost their jobs last month, but the number of job cuts at small businesses has steadily decreased in each of the last six months. We at Careersthatdontsuck.com are rooting for the small guys!
