According to the latest Conference Board Help Wanted Index, there are 363,000 jobs online now. That’s down 101,800 from last month, but labor demand is still up 67,000 over the past two months. The report reveals a slight upward trend in labor demand, with employers adding 40,000 jobs per month, on average, over the last 5 months. Unfortunately, though the upward trend is good news, the Conference Board report is more proof that the economic recovery is going to be a very slow process with the job market picking up the rear.
There are currently more than 15 million people unemployed, and just over 4 unemployed job-seekers for each available job. That’s the national picture, but the situation varies regionally and state-by-state. Employers in the South have posted the most jobs online (1,214,700), followed by the West (808,700), the Northeast (693,000), and the Midwest (654,000). California employers posted the largest number of ads in September (240,000), but California’s total job ads were down 24.3% between August and September. North Dakota employers posted the lowest number of new job ads in September (4,300), but its also got the lowest unemployment rate of any state, and is one of the least competitive in terms of the number of unemployed people per open job (2 per open job).
Most of the jobs posted online are healthcare, computer science and sales jobs.
