If you haven’t already solidified and begun working on your 2010 resolutions, then you should add a few career -related resolutions to your list. Sure, most of you probably already have “Get a new job” on the list. But, here are a few you may have missed.
2010 CAREER RESOLUTIONS
1. If you’ve got to start over, start in your dream career field. Working from the bottom is not as tiresome when you’re excited about getting to the top.
2. Develop a job search routine. If you don’t have somewhere to go and someone to call upon every day, you don’t have a routine and you won’t land your dream job soon.
3. FOCUS! Fear and desperation breed A.D.D. and disappointment in your job search. Pick 1-2 career fields. Focus on 1-2 jobs within those fields, and no more than 5 companies where you might want to work. Then, pull out all the stops to land those jobs.
4. Get Creative! The job market is thawing and a few jobs are on the vine. To land them, you’ll need to compete with new MBAs, new college grads and lots of smart, seasoned folks anxious to get back to work. Youll need to really bring it! No more boring resumes and emailed “Thank You” notes. Propose a research-backed strategy to solve your prospective employer’s biggest issue. Deliver work samples/portfolios that a show quality.
5. Enjoy the search. Don’t forget to build rejuvenating breaks into your job search. Take time to jot down all the tihings that are great about your life–with or without employment. Pat yourself on the back for mustering the nerve to ask for the interview, even if you don’t get it. Every small step is one step closer to your goal.
HAPPY 2010!
