The new Jobs Bill that just passed the Senate. Here are it’s key offerings:
- Employers who hire workers who have been unemployed 60 or more days are exempt from paying their portion of Social Security payroll taxes through December, and earn an additional $1,000 tax credit per worker if the worker remains employed for 1 year
- It renews highway programs funds through December and gives an additional $20B to the highway trust fund.
What the bill does not do is extend unemployment benefits for the long-term unemployed. In fact, if Congress doesn’t pass a temporary benefits extension, 1M+ unemployed people currently receiving jobless benefits will lose them today.
What do you think of the Jobs Bill? Will it stimulate hiring? Should it include a benefits extension?
