How Do We Determine Which Careers Don’t Suck?

We use our proprietary WorkYourWay Index. The index measures the Five Factors of Career Satisfaction
WorkYourWay Index

  • Each factor rates the career or job on a scale of 0-10.
  • For all except the RoadBlock Factor, “10″ is best and “0″ is worst.
  • For the RoadBlock Factor, “0″ indicates no significant barriers to entry–low education/experience requirements, lots of available jobs. A “10″ indicates high barriers to entry–stiff education/experience requirments, few jobs available.
  • The LiveWell and PayTheBills Factors are weighed more heavily than the others since working conditions and terms are the most important reasons people give for selecting a job or career.

The Factors Explained:

LiveWell Factor:

  • Measures stress, work environment, work hours and perks
  • 0-10: Extremely stressful or dangerous conditions, no perks, crazy 1st-yr medical resident hours; is very low stress, fun, safe environment, amazing perks, very flexible hours

PayTheBills Factor:

  • Measures salary, bonuses and benefits
  • 0-10: Where “10″ is pay near poverty line, no benefits or bonus; “10″ is Top exec pay, excellent benefits, generous bonus

RoadBlock Factor:

  • Measures barriers to entry–education, experience, exclusivity, job availability and job growth
  • 0-10: Where “10″ is Few/no roadblocks; “0″ is tough education, experience requirements, few available jobs, very hard to break in

Star Factor:

  • Measures likelihood job will lead to top executive or CEO (or to fame in some cases)
  • 0-10: Where “0″ is No path to the top; “10″ is Fast-track to CEO

GoodWorks Factor:

  • Measures whether the work or job itself delivers a social benefit (improving education, feeding the homeless, finding adoptive parents)
  • 0-10: Where “0″ is controversial work (cigarette companies); “10″ is saving small children
